Words, Words, Words 33 Word Watch The Oxford English Diction-ary is often called the "OED" for short (that's pronounced oh-ee-dee ). But linguistic scholars think that even this stupendous number represents barely half the total num- ber of English words. The OED editors agree. For their 1999 online version, there are 10,000 new or revised entries. The reason for this growth is that there are hundreds of dialects in English, each with many words that don't appear in a dictionary.
