Sentence Sense 65 Slice and Dice Choppy Sentences Short sentences can be powerful because they create a rapid-fire, staccato rhythm, but too many short sentences can also be jerky and abrupt. They're often boring because they're repetitive. In addition, choppy sentences can subvert meaning because every sentence seems the same. Choppy: Coherent: The brain is a wonderful organ. The brain starts working the moment you get up in the morning. It doesn't stop working until you get to work. Waiting at the corner, the bus passed me by. As written, this sentence states that the bus was waiting at the corner, not the potential passenger. To convey the writer's meaning, the sentence should read: As I waited at the corner, the bus passed me by.
