Winning Presentations

In business, presentations are a fact of life, particularly in the field of training and development. They can range from brief presentations before management to a series of talks that constitute a training program. The three critical areas for successful presentations, say experts, are planning, delivery, and follow-up.

Planning includes understanding the audience; assessing training needs and establishing objectives or goals for the presentation; researching the topic; designing the instruction; and matching facilities to program requirements. Delivery includes the presenter's style and ability to involve participants in meaningful learning activities and should follow fundamental guidelines for verbal and nonverbal communication, questioning and reinforcement, group interaction, and the appropriate use of humor. Follow-up includes the presenter's availability to provide feedback during the training, assistance to participants on the job, and evaluating transfer of learning.
