Guidelines for Using Visual Aids

No matter what type of visual aid you will be using, there are some basic principles that you should keep in mind while you're planning your presentation. Following are some general guidelines to follow.

Illustrate only one point per visual.

The audience should get the point of the visual within the first five seconds after it appears. After you show the visual, pause a moment to let it sink in, then discuss. Keep text, tables, and graphs short and simple.
