Chapter 4. The Art of Facilitation

Chapter 4. The Art of Facilitation

What’s Inside This Chapter

Here, you’ll see how to:

  • Develop your role as a facilitator

  • Incorporate facilitation skills into your presentation

  • Determine whether to ask questions

  • Ask the right kinds of questions to get your audience to participate

  • Conduct a question-and-answer session

  • Make the transition from one subject to another

  • Use the most effective facilitation techniques to enhance your presentation

  • Decide when and how to use humor in your presentation

If you’ve ever participated in any group workshop experience, you are probably familiar with the term facilitation. Sometimes presenters speak about “facilitating a group discussion” or just simply “facilitating a group.” Facilitation, like much of what you’ve learned so far, is much more an art than a science. Like artists who must learn the basic elements of their art before they can paint or compose, so, too, a facilitator must also understand the basic elements of facilitation to use it effectively in a presentation.
