Chapter 1. Presentation: A Critical Skill > Chapter-by-Chapter Highlights

Chapter-by-Chapter Highlights

This book uses the term presentation to represent a range of situations from one-on-one training to an informational seminar offered to a small group to a speech delivered to 200 people. Differences obviously exist in how you might prepare and present for each of these kinds of situations, but, as you will see, the techniques are very similar. Here’s a summary of the nine chapters in Presentation Basics:

  • Chapter 1—Presentation: A Critical Skill. The chapter you are reading gives you an overview of the book and explains how to take advantage of the basic presentation principles offered. It establishes the premise that the success of any presenter is based on being prepared and credible. The chapter also describes the icons used in this book and how these icons will help you get the most out of the information provided.

  • Chapter 2—Be Prepared to Succeed. Careful preparation is an absolute requirement for any successful presentation. This chapter introduces some important presentation basics, as well as six easy-to-follow steps guaranteed to make every presentation a successful one.

  • Chapter 3—Getting Ready to Deliver Your Presentation. Once you’re prepared, it’s time to deliver! This chapter takes the mystery out of developing a style that fits you and teaches you the most effective skills and techniques to use in your presentation. It also provides ways of relieving the anxiety that comes with making any presentation.

  • Chapter 4—The Art of Facilitation. Becoming an effective facilitator can take your presentations to a higher level. The art of good facilitation requires that you know when and how to ask the right questions and what it takes to create an atmosphere that fosters great discussions. This chapter can help you become a more skillful facilitator as you begin to incorporate more facilitation into your presentations.

  • Chapter 5—Setting the Right Environment. Paying attention to the details is what often separates a good presentation from a great one. In this chapter you will see how to set the right environment for your presentation by making the right choices of room size and arrangement, determining the proper setup of audiovisual support, and managing the minor interruptions that can affect any presentation.

  • Chapter 6—Choosing and Using Audiovisual Aids. People remember more of what they see than what they hear. That’s why choosing the right audiovisual aids can make or break a presentation. This chapter not only provides the basics, it goes into some details that can help you choose and use the audiovisual aids commonly used by new and experienced presenters.

  • Chapter 7—When Things Go Wrong. How can you handle disruptive or even unruly audience members? What do you do if you draw a blank in the middle of your presentation? Preventing problems is always the best road to take, but what happens when things go wrong even when you’ve done all you could to make things right? This chapter suggests some ways to handle the most common problems presenters encounter.

  • Chapter 8—Improving Your Skills. Smart presenters work to improve their craft. This chapter offers 20 practical actions you can take now to further your development as an effective presenter.

  • Chapter 9—Where to Get More Information. This chapter presents an extensive bibliography of the many written and technology-driven publications available to help you become a more effective presenter.
