Audiovisual Aids: The Basics and Beyond

Most readers of this book are looking for the basics of presentation. In the traditional training world, the basics means flipcharts and overhead transparencies. You can also use visual props and handouts to support your presentation. Now, trainers have myriad high-tech options from which to choose: videotape, digital versatile discs (DVDs), photographic slides, and digital slides. Believe it or not, it’s possible to download a PowerPoint presentation to your personal digital assistant (PDA), which can then interface via a special accessory to a digital projector. That way, you don’t even need to carry a laptop computer to project digital slides! So, how do you select the right audiovisual aid for your presentation?

It’s important to remember that despite all the amazing technology available for presentations, most presentations made still rely on effective use of low-tech, basic presentation tools. Besides, if you are not very familiar with your chosen presentation technology or you if have chosen technology over substance, you may be doing yourself more harm than good.
