20 Chapter 5. Eye-Contact Communication In this lesson you learn about the value of eye contact in communicating with your listeners. Think about all the people you're likely to meet throughout your career; many more than your parents or grandparents, who may have gone to work for an organization and stayed there until retirement. Each time you start another job and meet new colleagues, the ritual is usually the same. You extend your hand, look the other person in the eye, and introduce yourself. Perhaps you were one of those people who was told repeatedly by your parents, "Always look someone in the eye when you shake hands." It's a way of being polite, of showing respect, and it can even help you remember someone's name after you first meet.
