Do You Hear What I Hear? 26 First Contact Let's jump right in, shall we? Communication is the process people use to achieve understanding. When you want others to grasp your thoughts, you choose words to form your message and then say the message. Your receiver must read the message if he or she is to get your point. Often, the whole process takes only a few minute, but a great deal can happen within that time. One of the best ways to understand communication is to visualize it. Here's how communication works on the basic level: Kick it up a notch and we get this: Let's look at the process a little more closely. You're Only Human Communication is a human process. Although scientists have shown that some animals--notably apes and dolphins--communicate in a highly complex way, it's safe to say that most people don't do a lot of public speaking before apes and dolphins.
