Developing Your Feedback Skills

To incorporate the skills involved in giving and receiving feedback, you need to practice the skills. Hands-on experience is vital in mastering new skills. As for most people, giving or receiving effective feedback probably does not come naturally to you. What does come naturally, however, are the behaviors you have developed and practiced for years. Review your Feedback Effectiveness Self-Assessment and determine whether your check marks are where you want them to be. If they are, perhaps the behaviors listed are habits you want to practice and reinforce. But if the check marks are not where you want them to be, you may have habits that need to be modified or broken.

Modifying or breaking habits may threaten your comfort level. Complete the exercise in the sidebar Breaking a Habit at right. Pay close attention to your reactions. The reactions you experience during the exercise are similar to the feelings you would have while learning any new skill, whether it is skiing, dancing, using a new software program, or applying the feedback process. To develop new skills, you need to break or modify some habits, which is often hard to do.
