Receiving Feedback

The other side of the feedback coin is receiving feedback. Soliciting feedback can seem risky. It may be difficult to open yourself up to potential criticism, or perhaps you feel awkward about receiving complimentary feedback, especially in public. When you learn about others' perceptions of you, you may not like the message. Even if you aren't the person you want to be, hearing someone else suggest that you could or should be different can be painful.

Although the feedback process requires participation from both the sender and the receiver, being on the receiving end means you may not always have an opportunity to plan your approach to the situation. Often, what you hear catches you off guard. The sidebar Are You Ready to Receive Feedback? presents some questions that will help you understand your responsibilities as the receiver.
