Giving Feedback

Before getting started with guidelines for giving feedback, read the sidebar Case Study: Is This Effective Feedback? The sidebar introduces a few characteristics of ineffective feedback. To be effective, feedback must be expressed in a manner that helps the receiver hear the message while keeping the relationship intact. To accomplish these goals, the sender must:

  • show consideration

  • withhold judgment

  • deliver at an appropriate time

  • provide freedom to change or not

  • check for readiness

  • check for clarity.
