Make Sure You Evaluate It

Not all feedback is useful in making your behavior more effective, and only you can determine to what extent you want to act on other people’s perceptions. Sometimes low-impact feedback (low-information content) comes from usually reliable and consistent sources. Sometimes high-impact feedback comes from surprising sources, inconsistent sources, or even unreliable sources. Use the following framework, which we call the self-management model of feedback, to evaluate what you are told.

Accuracy. Who is giving you this feedback? What are their intentions, and how much do you respect their opinion?
