How to Ask for It

Asking for feedback is one of the most difficult tasks in the feedback process. Much of the quality and quantity of the information that you receive is dependent upon how you ask for it. We recommend that you use the Situation-Behavior-Impact model or SBI model to elicit relevant and forthcoming feedback from the people you ask.

The SBI model gives other people a framework for structuring their information and perceptions of you. It provides a way for you to get feedback that is specific and helpful and a safe way for others to give it. It breaks down the perception of your performance into three areas: describing the situation and your behavior, and then the impact that your behavior has had on the other people in the room.
