Chapter 8. Organizing Your Story > Fill in the Middle

Fill in the Middle

Here is one situation where a “thick middle” really works. In the middle of the story, the “plot thickens” and the reader learns more about the hero and how she deals with conflict. Apply the following tips for a fulfilling middle:

Keep things moving

Limit the number of new situations or characters

Keep the story focused on the conflict; a good short story has only one main conflict

Bring the hero to a level of frustration around solving the conflict
