Chapter 10. Getting Started with a Rough Draft > Freewriting for Speedy Results

Freewriting for Speedy Results

Writers Natalie Goldberg and Lawrence Block are among the teachers who advocate freewriting or writing practice for a first draft. In freewriting, you spill your thoughts onto the page or computer screen, letting your mind flow.

Give yourself a time limit, such as 10 or 15 minutes, to write a rough draft of your entire story. Skip every other line, or double space on the computer, so you can jot down extra ideas afterward.
