Chapter 8. Avoiding Sexist Language

The increasing number of women in business has changed many traditional practices, including the use of language. The English language has for centuries used the masculine singular pronoun he when the person to whom the pronoun was referring could be either male or female.

For example, “The average American worker changes jobs eight times in his career” was the correct form in traditional grammar. Nowadays, such grammar rules are evolving to avoid sexism and to make the language gender-neutral.
