Part IV: What’s Your Listening Attitude? > How to Help Someone Listen to You

Chapter 21. How to Help Someone Listen to You

Much of this book focuses on how you can become a better listener. And although your skills may improve, how do you help others improve their skills? How do you get them to listen to you?

The hard truth is that we can be responsible only for our own listening. If we listen respectfully and model good listening behavior we are more likely to be listened to. However, some people are not attentive listeners, despite your good example. In this case, be assertive and ask them to listen. Ask politely and with good will. If you don’t mention the problem, chances are they will continue to listen haphazardly, because poor listeners usually don’t know they are doing anything wrong. They are both unskilled and uninformed.
