Chapter 13. The Supporting Style > What gets a Supporter’s Attention?

What gets a Supporter’s Attention?

This one is easy. Supporters are natural listeners because they want to please. If your style is more forceful, tone it down and speak quietly and casually. Engage in small talk and be willing to add a personal touch to your discussion. The supporting style tends to listen more for feelings than facts, so include feelings with facts, such as, “I’d sure feel good about having this report on my desk by three o’clock.” Be specific about facts-especially deadlines—because time gets away from supporters very quickly. Ask for confirmation of information to be sure they heard you correctly. It doesn’t hurt to check in on a supporter’s progress on a project. They enjoy the attention, and it keeps them on track.

Quietly praise their work with gentle “feeling” words. “I liked the way you handled that call.” The supporting style doesn’t adapt easily to change, so give plenty of warning when changes are going to occur.
