Chapter 26. Be Present

Like it or not, we always choose whether or not we will listen. When we choose not to listen, our minds are on vacation and we do not interpret, evaluate, or respond appropriately to the speaker and the message. Only when we choose to “be present” are we focused on the speaker and the message.

Our number one alternative to being present is daydreaming. Daydreaming is a comfortable private escape. It normally doesn’t disturb anyone, and often others don’t realize we’re doing it. Daydreaming is what we elect to do when we choose not to be present.
