Filters

Both listeners and speakers have mental filters, which help or hinder the interpreting process. These filters are in our brain’s “database,” and they attach personal meaning to information. Some examples of filters include the following; can you add others?

memories perceptions
biases attitudes
expectations emotional hot-buttons
current attention span past experiences
values knowledge and intelligence
feelings self-esteem
language and vocabulary needs and motives
age sensory acuity
assumptions
