Chapter 8. Don’t Jargonize

Avoid unfamiliar jargon or bureaucratese, as this can confuse readers and distract attention from your real message. Overused, trendy words also weaken your message. The US government is famous for inscrutable jargon, such as this sign in a Federal government building: “All illumination on these premises must be extinguished upon departure.” Why not simply: “Please turn out the lights if you’re the last to leave!”
