Preface

Preface

Planet Earth is in the Information Age. America is no longer a smokestack economy. We’re a Knowledge Economy—our biggest export is information. Today, money moves with the speed of light. Information has to move faster.

Business writing has changed radically in the last few years. Surveys show the most sought-after skill in today’s business arena is: The ability to communicate clearly, correctly, and concisely, both in speech and in writing. No one has time to read long, wordy memos and letters. We all want our information faster.

While many of us are eliminating the fat from our diets and waistlines, some have yet to apply these Fat-Free principles to their communication style. Are people in your organization still writing “Pursuant to our conversation, enclosed please find the data which you requested.” Or: “Should you require additional information, please do not hesitate to call our office.” If they are, they’re dinosaurs!

Dinosaur English costs American businesses a billion dollars a year. The language of the new millennium is Shirtsleeve English—simple, straightforward, to the point. That’s what this short book is all about.
