Chapter 15. It Is Simply Faster

Effective business writing today is 10th grade level, not because businesspeople are less educated, but because we all want our information faster. Malcolm Forbes (whose “doer” communication style was always direct and to the point) once commented: “I read 10,000 business documents a year. You can’t make it too simple for me!”

Today, readers scan for meaning. Extensive research has been done on how the human eye processes written information—and K.I.S.S. is the key. Keep it short and simple: shorter words, shorter sentences, shorter paragraphs. Email has ushered in an unprecedented new informality in written language, and this has extended to paper writing—memos, letters, reports.
