Chapter 53. Tone of Voice

In person, you are like a television set. You have sight, sound, color, and motion. On the telephone, you are like a radio. All you have is voice, tone of voice, and the listener’s imagination.

The tone of your voice is especially important on the telephone, because it is the key indicator of your emotional state. In person, facial expressions and body language are part of the signals you send along with tone of voice. On the telephone, however, it is like listening to the radio: no visual signal. The tone of your voice assumes a greater role as a communication tool.
