Chapter 25. Some Final Thoughts > Giving Constructive Feedback via Letter or Me...

Giving Constructive Feedback via Letter or Memo

We have covered the basic skills in both receiving and giving critical feedback, but we have not discussed giving it via letter. There are several reasons why feedback is much more effective in person than by letter:

  1. You will not be able to discern how the other person is receiving it.

  2. You will have to wait for a reply, which can be stressful.

  3. The choice of words becomes even more important, because the recipient will have the opportunity to reread your feedback. In verbal criticism, you give the feedback once and then it is over.
