Chapter 1. Proofreading for Error-Free Copy > Achieving Error-Free Documents

Achieving Error-Free Documents

Comparison Method

Position the original document close to the updated or corrected copy. Move your eyes back and forth between the two. Hold your fingers or a pen/ pencil on the original and corrected copy and follow along as you read. Remember—proofreading is not a spectator sport; it takes effort and action on your part! If you are proofing an original document and your corrected copy is still on your computer screen, hold your original next to the screen. Again, keep your finger or a pen on the hard copy and run your cursor down the computer screen. Sometimes it’s possible to set the original on top of the corrected copy and hold both up to the light. Any discrepancies can be seen by using this technique.

Be careful not to lose your place. Avoid distractions as much as possible. Errors occur when you take your eyes and your attention off your copy.
