There is a widespread belief that a great resume will get you a great job. They are sure that outstanding construction, creative presentation of content and beautiful graphics will make you an irresistible candidate—doors will automatically open, and opportunity will knock. This is wishful thinking.

In fact, a great many variables affect who gets what opportunities where, when and how. Some variables fall within your control, such as the strength of your resume, your job search method, and your commitment to results. Other variables fall outside of your control, like a politicized hiring process or selection criteria that change.
