Chapter 2. Reviewing the Basics

Perhaps the most basic strategy in writing has to do with writing basics, such as spelling, grammar, punctuation and mechanics. Nothing distracts a reader more or reduces your credibility faster than a report or proposal filled with mechanical errors. If you have trouble with the basics (and you know who you are!), take steps now to improve. Enroll in an evening course at your local community college, or buy a book written to help with the basics of writing. It is never too late to learn to write well.

If your basic writing skills are generally strong, but you have trouble remembering some of the finer points of writing, the next few pages should provide a handy review.
