Writing a Letter

Here is a checklist to guide you in preparing a business letter.

  • Tell what the letter is about in the first paragraph.

  • If you are answering a letter, refer to the date it was written.

  • Be specific.

  • Keep the letter short.

  • For emphasis, underline important words.

  • At the end, tell the reader exactly what you want him or her to do or what you are going to do.

  • Close with something simple, like “Sincerely.”

  • Reread the letter and correct any errors.
