Commas

A punctuation mark that deserves special attention is the comma. The comma signals the reader to pause. If you say a sentence out loud, you can often hear a place in a sentence where a comma is necessary. It’s safer, however, to learn the rules for correctly using the comma. People who punctuate by ear are sometimes wrong!

If the rules confuse you, try this: omit all commas from your writing. Study the rules one at a time. Then, when you feel that you understand each rule, try it out. Next time you write, keep the rule in mind and put in a few commas. Then learn another rule, apply it, and so on. Take it one step at a time.
