Reviewing for Results

The following chart reviews possible core combinations you can use to create different sentence cores. Use compound and complex sentences for variety, and for expressing more complex ideas that are closely related.

Combining Sentence Cores
Type of Sentence Number and Type of Core Example
Simple sentence One independent core I wrote the letter.
Compound sentence Two independent cores I wrote the letter and he edited it.
Complex sentence One independent core and one or more dependent cores When I wrote the letter, he edited it.
Compound-complex sentence Two independent cores and one or more dependent cores When the manager requested the data I wrote the letter and he edited it.
