Chapter 4. Purposeful Paragraphs > Reviewing for Results

Reviewing for Results

In the paragraph that follows, note the absence of a topic sentence, CORE CONTROL, and transitions. Because these elements are absent, the paragraph is hard to read and even harder to understand. To show the lack of CORE CONTROL, the subjects are circled. Notice that no unity exists among the circled subjects, so the reader has few clues as to the real meaning of the paragraph. This paragraph is an example of “textual applesauce.”

The similar increase in the lack of productivity is based in part on the failure of the academic community to provide the business community with a practical, pragmatic and precise set of tools to influence and understand human motivation. To be effective in business, the individual characteristics of the people you must interact with must be dealt with constructively. Be it a secretary, a client, or a technician, these people have a different perspective and understanding of the business at hand. This difference can be an advantage if it is utilized properly. It is disastrous if it is misunderstood or mishandled. A similarly skilled understanding is needed to comprehend and influence the complex interactions of your business in relation to other businesses and the economy as a whole.
