2.2.2 The Activities Report

Organizations ask their employees to report on their activities. Whether submitted weekly or monthly, these reports provide updated information on projects.

Often, however, activities reports are neglected documents, dashed off the morning they are due for submission. This strategy is ill advised for two reasons. First, as in the case of memos, managers communicate with one another by means of activities reports: managers tell us that they draw upon items from activities reports to write their own reports. As we have seen many times, an especially well-written item could be distributed by your group manager and eventually wind up on the desk of the CEO. Second, these reports are a chance to let management know about your efforts. Both problems and successes may be recorded formally in these reports and thus promote action and praise for your work.
