Chapter 14. Style

A recent bibliographic essay cites hundreds of articles dealing with style in technical communications. It might be imagined, then, that a definition of technical style might be given easily. No single definition, however, is satisfactory. Why?

This book began by defining technical writing as writing that explains technology to various technical, organizational, and societal audiences. Sometimes, these audiences must be addressed through different strategies, so it is impossible to talk about one kind of style in so complex a communications situation. Organization, length, sentence structure, word choice—all vary as communications situations shift.
