Appendix C. Technical Writing and English as a Second Language

More than 50% of all foreign college students declare majors in science and technology, and it is estimated that in the 1990s over half a million foreign students will be studying technologically related subjects. As these students graduate and take their places in American organizations, they will face unique communications situations. In addition, as the European common market opens and adds a greater sense of internationalism to organizations, non-native speakers and writers will be encountered with increasing regularity.

How can those who do not command English as their first language benefit by writing instruction? The following procedural guidelines will prove helpful:
