Getting through to Sell

Every sales representative knows the importance of getting through the myriad of screeners and secretaries to get to the sales prospect. Humor works in getting cooperation. It is prudent to use humor in building positive bridges to support staff rather than trying to get around them. If they are your ally, they can often make your sale. The next time you run into a surly screener take a try at humor.

Strategies That Work

“Don’t tell me. I bet I’m the twentieth call you’ve had this morning.”

“If I’m the interruption that interrupted your last interruption, I promise to keep it brief.”

“Try being like a disc jockey by saying: ‘I’m sorry you’re only the fourth caller! Please try again.’”

“We both know the best gift you can give someone is to cancel a meeting. Look, if you’ll give me another appointment later this week, I’ll stop pestering you now.”

Write humorous notes on the outside of your letters. Try, “PLEASE OPEN BEFORE READING.”
