Chapter 3. The Communication Edge > How to Tell a Story that Makes People Laugh

How to Tell a Story that Makes People Laugh

The magical answer to making others laugh lies less in technique than in the three big P’s—Practice, Practice and Practice. Practice won’t make you perfect but it will make you better. Tell one joke a week to every person you have a few moments to talk to. If individuals laugh, so will those on the job. Learn from experience what lines and set-ups work. You will keep some and throw many away. Cement the good ones to memory and write them in your “Humor Log”. When you practice telling your stories, following are some “keepers” worth remembering:

“If you can’t hit oil in 20 seconds, stop boring.”

Larry Wilde
