Chapter 3. The Communication Edge > Keep Your Humor “On Target”

Keep Your Humor “On Target”

If a joke or story has no point, leave it to the comedians. Humor that works and is on target progresses the message of the communicator. Start asking yourself: Does my story provide meaningful commentary? Will it be a bonus that moves my message along? Does it tie into my main point? Is it pertinent? Remember, even a good story can’t be substituted for a good central message. Make humor work in carrying your message or save the story for the lunch room later.

Strategies That Work

In business, low risk humor is on-target humor. Following are some anonymous, on-target humor statements from managers that make a point. Read them to see if you get the message. If you do, feel free to use them to make a point in your activities.

“Do you like to travel? Do you want to meet new friends? Do you want to free up your future? All this can be yours if you make just one more mistake.”

“50% of being smart is knowing what you’re dumb at.”

“Society is composed of three kinds of people: a few who make things happen, many who watch things happen and the majority—who have no idea what happened.”

“Any person who says it can not be done should not interrupt those who are doing it.”

“If you want to win the race take the time to look at the map. Following others can never be the strategy for those who want to win.”
