Chapter 3. The Communication Edge > International Humor

International Humor

Using humor outside of your own country is not always easy, but it can be an asset. A good humorous example that illustrates a point by capitalizing on a common human foible is usually safe. Cartoons can be especially effective because they are visual and their themes are often international. If cartoons reinforce your point, test them on individuals before using them in groups.

Whatever medium of humor you use, take the time to simplify your story and remove colloquial phrases that would be hard to translate. Try out your stories to see whether they still fit before you use it with important business contacts.
