Preface

Preface

“When a comedian uses humor, we’re always asking ‘Is it funny?’ When you use humor in the business world, the question is different. You are asking—‘Does it work?’” That comment, shared by Gabe Cohen, a former Second City comedian, accomplished actor, and co-presenter at a HUMORWORKS Seminar, helped define the unique purpose of this book.

This is not another book to make you laugh. You will laugh, but that’s not the purpose. It is designed to introduce you to the value of humor and how you can learn to use it on the job to increase not only your personal and professional effectiveness, but also the effectiveness of others.

Making Humor Work is a friendly, practical guide. You will learn how humor unlocks the receptivity of others and helps to enhance communication.

You will be shown how humor can disarm anger and defuse resistance to change while still promoting problem solving.

Perhaps, most important, you will learn how humor can help you develop more self-confidence and manage stress in a changing world.

Humor can help your organization run smoother, cut medical costs, increase sales and production levels, and even polish the company’s public image.

A benefit on any job is laughter. It should never be a crime to have fun on the job; it may very well be a crime not to. And best of all, it doesn’t cost a penny.

Making Humor Work is not a book to be read once and deposited on a shelf. It is a book to return to for refueling about how to keep humor your ally on the job. Enjoy it and enjoy it again. And now, let there be laughter, and let it begin with you.
