Chapter 4. Disarming Anger With Humor > Humor and Your Inner Attitude

Humor and Your Inner Attitude

Your use of humor in conflict management starts as an inner attitude. Behind every angry person is usually a problem that needs addressing. Confident people are not intimidated. Instead they want to move quickly beyond the anger to initiate productive problem-solving.

One successful manager keeps her perspective when handling angry customers by imagining a panel of judges awarding her points for her ability to handle a problem and the difficult customer. There are two scores for each judge: A form score and a degree of difficulty score. Mentally imaging that comical scene helps her avoid emotional reactions herself.
