THE POWER OF ANALOGIES

Analogies can have the same impact as metaphors. An analogy allows you to introduce a new idea quickly by comparing it with something familiar and simple. When Benjamin Franklin said, "Fish and visitors start to smell in three days," he was delivering a vivid message of why we tire of visitors who outlive their welcome.

Analogies are particularly useful when you have to produce complex abstract data as part of your presentation. By comparing the complex and abstract with something simple and concrete, your listeners understand by association.[15]
