Chapter Sixteen. The Final Stages > Editing your speech

Editing your speech

To do a really thorough job of editing, you need to consider five broad areas. They are content, organization, style, language, and grammar.

Edit for content

In editing your speech for content, question everything. Check every statement, every statistic, every quotation for accuracy. Examine every metaphor, analogy, quotation, statistic, and illustration for suitability. Ask yourself: Will this metaphor invoke the right picture in the minds of the audience? Will that analogy really help to enlighten? Will this anecdote reveal anything of importance about the subject or speaker?
