Every day is special

References to the date or time of year are an old standby. Here is an opening for a speech in which a company president delivered a sort of annual report to employees shortly after January 1:

This is a wonderful way to start the new year—to spend an hour or so with old friends and familiar faces, to talk about our company, look back over the past year, and maybe take a peek into the future.

One evening during the Christmas holiday my wife and I were watching one of those year-end rehashes in which some television commentator tells us everything that happened during the year and then solemnly explains what it all meant. When it was over my wife said, "Well, nothing is going to happen in 1992, because everything that can happen, did happen in 1991."

Well, it was an eventful year. It began with the mother of all battles and ended with the grandfather of all recessions.
