REMEMBER

The problems that arise from differences in the perception of the credibility of men and women in the workplace are complex. So are the solutions. But the first step is to recognize that this is not a woman's issue; it is a corporate issue. Men, women, organizations, and business overall will benefit if men and women of equal rank, training, and expertise are afforded equal credibility.

On an individual level, we must recognize that men and women have been socialized to behave in particular ways and to expect certain behaviors from others. As male and female business communicators, we all have behavioral tendencies. As male and female audiences, we all have biases. Finally, as members of organizations, we have responsibilities. We must recognize both our strengths and weaknesses and those of others to create the greatest possible perception of personal and corporate credibility.
