GENDER DIFFERENCES IN STEP FIVE: EVALUATE FEEDBACK

The differences in the way men and women give and receive feedback may present the most substantial and obvious applications of gender research to the Strategic Communication Model. These differences center on four basic behaviors: the ways in which men and women listen, attribute success and failure, accept responsibility and blame, and filter positive and negative information.

Behaviors That Affect Feedback

Listening behavior. In general, when a woman listens, she offers an active response—that is, she nods her head or says "um-hum" to indicate her attention. A man who is actively listening may simply look directly at the speaker without moving or speaking.
