Chapter 10. Unit summary: First impressions and building rapport

Topic A In this unit, you learned about the elements that influence a first impression, including appearance, knowledge, and social composure.
Topic B Then, you learned about the guidelines you should follow for building rapport and credibility with others. You learned how to establish rapport by adapting to the other person’s communication style, finding common ground, and focusing on mutually beneficial goals. Then, you learned how to establish credibility by demonstrating competency, building trust, and exhibiting sincerity.
Topic C Finally, you learned about the guidelines for asking questions, which include using unequivocal language and specific phrases, as well as avoiding jargon. You also learned about the types of questions you should avoid asking, such as assumption questions, statement questions, hidden agenda questions and questions that seek a specific response.
