Chapter 24. Cultural networks > Disadvantages of cultural networks

Disadvantages of cultural networks

The disadvantages of using the cultural network include decreased productivity and decreased integrity of information. Decreased productivity can result when vague information is passed through the cultural network. If information is vague or unclear, employees have to spend time clarifying, verifying, and analyzing the information.

Decreased integrity of information is a concern whenever information is passed informally through the cultural network. When information is passed informally, it can be altered slightly by each person who passes it on. As the information spreads through the cultural network, it can evolve into a form that barely resembles the original information. To counteract the effects of decreased productivity and integrity, make sure you give clear and specific facts whenever you use the cultural network.
