In compliance with the legal rules and regulations, your lay off will take effect as of August 20th.

Martha, thanks for coming into the meeting. Unfortunately, I have an important task to carry out, one which I am not happy about. Because of the ongoing recession in the IT industry, we have decided to take certain steps to cut costs, including reducing our workforce.

It is not that you are being singled out. The axe is going to fall on 300 people in our organization. The HR department will give you your paycheck on your last working day.

This is a written notice of your layoff. Let me also add that I would really like to have you continue working for me, but there isn’t much that I can do.
